Traffic Safety Update: City Evaluating Nearby Intersections
The City of Orlando is taking a number of steps to address longstanding concerns among Fairway Cove homeowners, including speeding in the neighborhood and safety along South Hiawassee Road.
For more than a year, the Fairway Cove Board has been in discussions with the City about these concerns and ways to make our area roads safer. While the Orlando Police Department continues to patrol neighborhood streets and conduct traffic stops when officers are available, the City is also conducting an intersection safety evaluation at Hiawassee Road and Fairway Cove Drive.
The City’s Traffic Studies team has collected traffic movement counts, speed measurements and traffic volume data. That information is now with the City’s consultant for a more detailed safety review.
The evaluation also includes Hiawassee Road and Raleigh Street. The City combined the two evaluations to coordinate its efforts and better understand traffic conditions throughout the area. Data collection was timed to take place while school was in session to capture the busiest traffic patterns and congestion.
The City anticipates completing the analysis within six to eight weeks. The findings will help identify potential safety improvements, though specific recommendations have not yet been finalized.
The Board will continue following up with the City and share updates as findings and next steps become available. In the meantime, please follow posted speed limits, watch for pedestrians and cyclists, and use extra care when entering or leaving Fairway Cove.
