UPDATE: MetroWest Pauses Planned Flock Camera Program

UPDATE: On September 2, 2026, the MetroWest Master Association announced in a letter to the community that it was pausing its planned Flock camera safety program.

The pause applies to the entire proposed deployment. Although the MWMA Board previously approved 25 camera locations, MWMA confirmed no cameras have been installed or activated.

MWMA initially proposed a community-wide network of license plate recognition and video cameras intended to support public-safety and law enforcement investigations. Fairway Cove leadership has been in conversation with MWMA to ensure it understood the questions and concerns surrounding the initiative, including data retention and access, safeguards against misuse, and program oversight.

Since then, the State of Florida has taken action involving automated license plate recognition systems located within State Highway System rights-of-way. State officials have also raised broader questions about privacy, data collection, and the appropriate use of this technology.

In its letter, MWMA said these developments represented a meaningful change in the environment surrounding the program. MWMA will now review the State’s actions, as well as legal, privacy, operational, contractual, contractural, and financial questions surrounding the initiative.

The pause does not mean the program has been permanently canceled or that the proposed MetroWest program has been determined to be unlawful. It means MWMA will complete its review before deciding whether to proceed. The reported startup investment for 2026 is $109,150, which includes initial deployment costs for the system. Looking ahead, MetroWest anticipates ongoing operating costs beginning in 2027 if the program is activated.
